Swangard Stadium

The stadium in which the Vancouver Whitecaps play their games is called Swangard Stadium.

BC Place Stadium

www.whitecapsfc.com/...es/5303/320x225.aspx

On May 16, 2008, Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced their intention to pursue a lease agreement in a renovated BC Place Stadium, which is scheduled to open in early 2011.

Upgrades to BC Place will occur in two phases:

Phase One upgrades, which include renovations to suites, seating, washrooms and concession stands, and enhancement of the existing roof liner, has already begun and will be complete prior to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Phase Two upgrades, which will include a new retractable roof and field turf, is expected to be designed, budgeted and tendered by early 2009, and ready for use in 2011.

Dominion Fairmile, the general contractor, will carry out Phase One work valued at $65 million. The cost of the refurbishments will be funded through the BC Pavilion Corporation’s (PavCo) cash reserves and future development of PavCo lands around BC Place. Additional revenues will come from new sponsorships and increased business.

The upgrades and proposed new roof are part of an overall plan to further establish the area around BC Place as a vibrant sport, culture and entertainment district, including a new waterfront site for the Vancouver Art Gallery on False Creek.

Proposed Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium

At the same time, the Whitecaps are continuing to pursue the construction of the proposed soccer-specific Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium on downtown Vancouver’s central waterfront and rail lands.

The Whitecaps have been pursuing plans to build a 20,000-seat waterfront stadium in downtown Vancouver since 2003. In December 2007, the club released a four-year strategic plan, Vision 2011, which identified several opportunities contingent upon the completion of the proposed stadium, or the availability of another suitable facility.

CANADIAN SOCCER ASSOCIATION

“The CSA continues to work to secure major CONCACAF and FIFA competitions. Given the success of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 tournament in greater Vancouver last summer, we would like to potentially see that region play a major role in these future events. We are excited about the renovations planned for BC Place and feel it will be a great world-class venue to complement these world-class events.”

Peter Montopoli, General Secretary, Canadian Soccer Association

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

“We believe Vancouver is a potential market for a future Major League Soccer expansion team. There is no doubt the market for professional soccer exists in Vancouver, as we saw last November when nearly 50,000 fans attended the exhibition match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Whitecaps.

“We understand the newly-renovated BC Place Stadium will be a world-class facility. We look forward to learning more about the proposed renovations, so that we may determine whether BC Place can serve as an interim venue for an MLS team - pending the construction of a soccer-specific stadium.

“MLS will have 16 teams by 2010, with the addition of Seattle next year, and Philadelphia the following season. We are currently in discussions with potential expansion team owners and local governments in many markets across North America regarding the 17th and 18th teams.

“We look forward to continuing our discussions with the Whitecaps regarding the opportunity to award a Major League Soccer expansion team to Vancouver in the future."

Don Garber, Commissioner, Major League Soccer

^ thanks for the support!

We need as much of it as we can especially from MLS teams and fans.. The MLS board was saying how they plan to have like 16 or 18 teams in the MLS.. A few other teams interested in the bid of opening up a franchise in the MLS include Ottawa, Philadelphia, another team from NY, Las Vegas and Montreal..

We have had great fan support back in the 70's and 80's and I don't see why we shouldn't have a great fan support again especially with the bid of opening up a franchise in the MLS.. Plus after the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Vancouver will be the place to be and it will just attract a lot of people to the games!

I remember going to a Whitecaps friendly game when they played against the Indian NT.. The caps won the game lol..

Here is a little bit of info about the Whitecaps if you are interested..
