VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Whitecaps are looking for a new president after John Rocha resigned Tuesday to start his own consulting practice.

Rocha, who joined the Whitecaps in 2005 after spending over 13 years with the Vancouver Canucks, will remain with the club as a consultant on sales and marketing issues. Rocha will launch Caps Kickstarters, a corporate supporter club, in his consulting role.

Caps Kickstarters will aim to create a group of corporate supporters for the Whitecaps and Rocha will also be involved with a similar program for the women's side of the organization.

Rocha will also chair the Burnaby site Organizing Committee for next summer's FIFA Under-20 World Cup matches at Swangard Stadium.

Vancouver Whitecaps are looking for a new president after John Rocha resigned yesterday.

Rocha was hired early last year after 13 years in the Vancouver Canucks' marketing department. He plans to pursue various sports and entertainment marketing projects, but pledged to remain involved with the club as a consultant. He is launching a corporate supporters' club for the men's and women's teams similar to the B.C. Lions' Waterboys.

"It was a difficult decision, it took me a long time to decide, but these other opportunities kept popping up," Rocha said. Rocha will remain chairman of the local organizing committee for next year's FIFA Under-20 World Cup matches at Swangard Stadium.

Under Rocha, the Whitecaps signed new sponsors and ticket subscribers, launched the Nations Cup tournament and hosted the W-League championship. Most importantly, Whitecaps received conditional city council approval for the proposed Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium after a lengthy, politically charged process.

"I enjoyed the entire role of being president of the Whitecaps. Obviously I enjoyed some components more," he said.

"Greg Kerfoot's vision is an incredible one. I'm very confident the stadium will be built."
