2002 600 F4i keeps shutting off while riding?

Any ideas as to why would help me out.

A friend came to my work today saying his bike would randomly turn off while riding. Once it sits off for about 2 minutes it would start back up and some time later die again...

I took it for a 5 minute ride and it died 3 times. The first time I was in second and just shifted into 3rd giving it a healthy amount of throttle until it sputtered then had no engine power. I pulled over and looked over all i could see (no obvious problems) Started back up and went back to the shop.

We pulled off the gas tank and all wires are plugged in and nothing lose or falling apart.

Check the battery and both wires were firmly on.

Now...

A few times we wouldn't here the fuel pump prime when we turn the key to "on" When it didnt the bike would not start, when it did the bike fired right up (but still will randomly shut down when riding).

Put two and two together and we think the fuel pump may be fluffed...

Thoughts or similar experiences???

good buddy of mine, I was there when he first went to see the thing. I had my reservations about it.
