Possibly Stripped Oil Drain Plug?

Alright well i just did my oil change everything went well, took off the side fairings for ease of acess no problems anyways after getting everything done i tightened my drain plug and i believe i stripped it. It will feel tight then 1more light push and its loose again so i believe i stripped the grooves inside my bike hopefully it didnt and all i need to do is replace the plug.. but any suggestions i rode the bike home from a friends no problems (short ride) and i can bring it to orca bay suzuki in the morning only thing is i dont want them to rape me to fix this and pay them $100 plus for an oil change again after i just paid $50 and did it myself anyways any suggestions on what it could be or any advice please would be appreciated its only dripping a little bit of oil but fairly noticeable and would not be safe to ride with it like this thanks for your help guys

If you stripped it you may end up paying a hell of a lot more than $100 as the whole oil pan may need to be replaced.

I stipped the same thing on my old car - had to get the whole thing removed, new thread put in, etc. Pain in the ass.

sounds like its stripped...Just a warning, if you insist on riding be aware if it falls out some bad can happen....if it doesnt douche your rear tire with oil and you dont crash,,,,,it will run out of oil and ruin the engine...Take care!

well did some searching online im gona call orca bay tomorrow hopefully get them to tap it and put an oversize plug or a helicoil into it hopefully for a reasonable price as its a small job chance are slim that i have to actually replace the oil pan anyways thanks for the help hopefully it all works..cause my bike was running and sounding so much better after the change

I might be wrong, but I pretty sure...

The pan strips, the bolt never does (steel bolt vs aluminum pan).

The pan is too thin to heli-coil.

The pan is too thin to tap a bigger size.

You are best to replace the oil pan if it is indeed stripped.

The fairings, radiator, exhaust have to come off, then the drain pan. More than 1 hour for sure.

A new crush washer every time, and a decent torque wrench until you get the torque thing fugured out.

But, maybe you didn't, hopefully not.

Not sure about this model and if the pan is to thin? Most likely a heli coil is the way to go. You can by a kit and do it your self. If in fact there is not enough meat left to put a heli coil in then price out a new pan. To much money? get it tig welded and taped.I had the same dilemma many years ago with a Yamaha. Leaving for a big trip the next day. I got an expandable rubber plug from a auto supply store. Worked well for the next year. I ended up selling the bike.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I'm 99% sure that Orca Bay (or any other shop) can helicoil it to solve the problem. The oil drain on my GSXR has plenty of meat for a helicoil.

Half an hour shop labor plus parts and you should be good to go. The hardest part will be lining up a drill under the bike.

I Heli Coiled my TL,

Easy and permanent.

And now, I am using a torque wrench every time.

Lesson learned.
