Around 1980, Kazuyoshi Ishii (the founder of k-1) made the first Seidokan Karate school in Osaka later renamed Seido kaikan,K-1's origins come from this style of Karate.
In the 80's the first All Japan Karate-Do Tournament is held this would be the beginning of what became k-1 .Once the early 90's came they started to use gloves and become truly full contact.
1993 k-1 is formed and Mr Ishii makes the first K-1 Grand Prix
all standup styles are allowed however Karate, Muay Thai and kickboxing become the main three. K-1 becomes worldwide having tournament's in many different countries.
It is now looked on as the #1 standup org in the world.
Fighters from all around the world can now compete to see who is the best, and a $400,000 payday for the winner of the world grand prix.
Also in 2002 the K-1 World Max tournament came into play for fighters in 70kg class. Now K-1 has a mma division k-1 Hero's which battled Pride in Japan for the top spot.
