CL Group Match 2: Rosenborg v. Arsenal

Will3172010-04-29 07:21:42 +0000 #1
Tomorrow (Wednesday) night, Arsenal face a tough away trip to Norway, facing the national champions Rosenborg Trondheim. The weather and distance will make it more tough, and Rosenborg don't often lose at home, but I still say we'll come away with a 2-1 victory.

BBC Sport - 28.09.04

Rosenborg v. Arsenal

Date: Weds, 29 September

Venue: Stadium Lerkendal

Kick off: 1945 BST

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rosenborg have no players suspended, although Orjan Berg would land himself a subsequent ban if he was booked.

Arsenal are set to welcome back Sol Campbell after the England centre-back showed no ill effects from his Achilles tendon injury at the weekend.

Midfielder Robert Pires (foot) has an outside chance of featuring in Norway but Brazilian Gilberto Silva may face a month out with a back problem.

The Gunners will also be without Dennis Bergkamp, who has a fear of flying.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Head-to-head

These clubs have not previously met in European competitions.

Rosenborg have played English sides on four previous occasions, winning their two home matches and losing the away matches.

In the 1969/1970 Fairs Cup Rosenborg recorded a 1-0 home win over Southampton before losing the return leg 2-0.

In the 1995/1996 Champions League the Norwegians beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 only to be defeated 4-1 in the return match.

Arsenal's only previous run-in with a Norwegian side came in the 1971/1972 Champions Cup, when they beat Strømsgodset IF 3-1 in Norway and 4-0 in London.

European history

This year will mark the ninth time Rosenborg will participate in the Champions League.

The best European Cup result so far for Rosenborg is reaching the CL quarter-finals in 1996/1997 when they were eliminated by Juventus.

Arsenal's best result in the Champions League is reaching the quarter-finals (2000/2001 and 2003/2004). The Londoners are making their seventh appearance in the CL main competition.

Arsenal's European trophies are the 1969/1970 Fairs Cup and the 1993/1994 Cup Winners' Cup.

Current European form

Rosenborg are unbeaten in their last 13 European home matches. Their last home defeat came on 18 September 2001 when they lost 2-1 to FC Porto.

Rosenborg's last CL win (home and away) was almost three years ago, on 23 October 2001, when they beat Celtic 2-0 in Norway.

Arsenal have scored at least one goal in each of their last nine Champions League matches.

The last CL match in which Arsenal failed to score was on 30 September 2003 when they recorded a 0-0 draw away at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Player and disciplinary info

Rosenborg's Ørjan Berg will be suspended if booked.

Arsenal's Thierry Henry (31 goals), Fredrik Ljungberg and Robert Pires (10 goals each) are the CL top scorers in the current Arsenal squad.

Rosenborg have only three foreign players in their squad: Mikael Dorsin from Sweden, Robbie Russell from USA and Alexander Tettey from Ghana.

Arsenal will almost certainly field a maximum of two English players - Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell - from the total of six in their squad.

Arsenal's Thierry Henry and José Antonio Reyes currently lead the top scorer table in the Premiership with Nicolas Anelka of Manchester City, having scored five goals in seven matches.

Rosenborg's Frode Johnsen is currently top scorer in the Norwegian domestic league having scored 16 goals in 21 matches.

Other miscellaneous facts

This match marks the 100th Champions Cup/Champions League match for Rosenborg (including preliminaries).

In the 99 matches played so far Rosenborg have recorded 36 wins, 21 draws and 42 defeats.

Rosenborg are three goals away from conceding their 100th Champions League goal. So far the Norwegian club have conceded 97 goals in 57 CL matches.

Frode Johnsen's last minute goal on Matchday One came to no avail as the Norwegians folded 2-1 at Panathinaikos.

It was the fifth Rosenborg goal in the last minute of a CL match. None altered the outcome of the match.

An own goal by PSV's Alex granted the Arsenal a victory on Matchday One.

It was the second time the Gunners had benefitted from a CL own goal. On 9 December 1998, Panathinaikos' Aljosa Asanovic beat his own goalkeeper to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead in Athens. Arsenal proceeded to win that match 3-1.

On Matchday One, Arsenal equalled a club record by fielding only one (Ashley Cole) English player in the starting line-up for a CL match.

They also had 10 foreigners start in matches at Celta de Vigo (24 Feb 2004) and once again hosting PSV (12 Nov 2002).

Rosenborg BK consolidated their leading Tippeligaen position via a 3-1 home win against Sogndal IL last Saturday.

Reyes will take over Bergkamp tonight... It's a nice opportunity for him, maybe he could even keep Bergkamp out of the team for a while if he plays well...

BBC Sport - 29.09.04

Wenger depends on Reyes

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is relying on Jose Antonio Reyes to fill the void left by Dennis Bergkamp's absence against Norwegian champions Rosenborg.

"He has a big part to play in the game," said Wenger. "He has been fantastic and adapted quickly.

"His character is stronger and certainly since the start of the season he has been a big, and good, surprise.

"He is an expected replacement for Dennis, especially away from home in Europe - that is why I bought him."

He added: "At the moment he is happy out wide on the left. He has freedom on the wing.

"I feel he will be a central player, but at the moment he feels comfortable on the left."

Wenger also believes the game will prove a test of his team's Champions League credentials.

"We want to go into this competition with the same belief we have in the Premiership, and do well two or three games on the trot because then you feel really strong," said Wenger.

"The match will be another indicator because we are favourites, go to a difficult ground, a hostile environment, not an aggressive one.

"But it is not the most prestigious of games and to come back with a result would be a good test for us."
