Battling Chelsea Win Pleases Grant

Chelsea manager Avram Grant was delighted with the way his side dug deep to beat Tottenham 2-0 at home and was pleased with the brief appearance of new signing Nicolas Anelka.

Juliano Belletti's powerful 25-yard strike put Chelsea ahead after Spurs left him with room to shoot at goal.

Tottenham struggled to create clear chances, with Steed Malbranque going closest with a well-struck volley.

Nicolas Anelka hit the bar after making his Chelsea debut off the bench and Shaun Wright-Phillips sealed the win with a low shot past Radek Cerny.

“I think it was a good game and it’s not easy to play against Tottenham. We played good football and controlled the game in the first half” Grant said.

“In the second half we could easily have scored two or three more goals and they didn’t even have one chance so I’m happy.

“The message we have sent out in the last three weeks is that we are not concentrating on who is missing, but we do miss them- they are very good players” he added.

Grant revealed he was not just pleased to be winning, but was delighted with the manner of Chelsea’s play.

“It not that we’re winning, we are dominating games. We continue to develop our new style of football so I cannot ask more” he explained.

The Blues boss also had praise for new-boy Nicolas Anelka, who made his debut as a second half substitute.

“When he came on he hit the post and forced the keeper to make a very good save. Normally he would not have played in this game because he did not train with us but we do not have strikers.

“So we put him on the bench and he is such an intelligent player that he knows how we play and how to fit in.”
