From the BBC:

Essien escapes further punishment

Michael Essien has escaped any further disciplinary action following his tackle on Bolton defender Tal Ben Haim.

The Chelsea midfielder appeared to be lucky to escape with a yellow card after the wild challenge - a decision that shocked Bolton boss Sam Allardyce.

Referee Rob Styles agreed to look at the incident again on video despite being "fairly close" to the tackle.

He informed the Football Association he would have shown a red card had he seen the incident from another angle.

Bolton were leading 1-0 at the time that the Ghanaian international clattered into the Israeli, catching him high on his shin.

The Trotters eventually lost 5-1 and Allardyce believes that Essien helped his cause in not seeing red by feigning an injury of his own.

"He was very, very clever," said Allardyce. "I am shocked he was not sent off but Essien went down as if he was injured himself.

"He knew it was a bad tackle, of course he did. We all knew - apart from the referee, unfortunately. He booked him but he knows it should have been a red."

The champions maintained their 100% start to the Premiership season with a second-half flurry of four goals in nine minutes, during which time Bolton's Ricardo Gardner was dismissed for handball.

"We went down to 10 men with the score at 2-1, whereas Chelsea should have been 1-0 down and down to 10 men," added Allardyce.

"I could have been the first manager to beat Chelsea this season. It has been a major influence on the result."

That was a horrible tackle, I can't beliveve he has got away with it.
