Mourinho backs fringe stars

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told his fringe players they will be given a chance this season.

Scott Parker and Glen Johnson have hardly figured in the first team at Chelsea this term and subsequently lost their places in the England squad.

"Claudio Cudicini, Glen Johnson, Scott Parker and Robert Huth are the players without chances to play," Mourinho said on Chelsea TV.

"But I think over a season the chance normally has to arrive."

And Mourinho wants his fringe players to remain focused and bide their time so they are ready when their opportunity arises.

"We have a beautiful group of people and people are happy because we are winning. We are getting results and this is the main reason to make us happy," he added.

"But of course they cannot be fully happy because they are not playing football.

"And the question is for them to be top pros, like they are, keep working, be ready and, when the chance arrives, they have to go.

"I can give as a perfect example Damien Duff. He was not playing. He's in the line-up at this moment.

"Alexei Smertin, he was even out of the selection for a few matches and now he's playing. And this is the answer they have to give to me."

Mourinho revealed that the form of several players has made it impossible for him to give others an opportunity.

He said: "The question is some players are playing so well that, without any kind of problem, I don't touch them.

"Petr Cech, John Terry, Paulo Ferreira, Claude Makelele, I don't touch them because they are playing so perfect, I cannot touch them.

"I think the squad is happy because the team is winning. And this is the best feeling we must have, to think more about the team than individuals."
