Chelsea agree Carvalho Deal

Chelsea today made an agreement with Porto to sign star Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho.

I think this is a little expensive, although there's no doubt he's a quality player. Porto seem to be falling apart - how many key men have left in quick succession now?

BBC Sport - 27.07.04

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Porto to sign central defender Ricardo Carvalho for a £19.85m. Both clubs have confirmed the deal and the 26-year-old is at the Stamford Bridge outfit to finalise the move.

"The player is in London and has passed a medical, and is currently discussing personal terms," said a statement from the big-spending Premiership club.

Carvalho will follow Blues boss Jose Mourinho and right-back Paulo Ferreira to Chelsea from Porto this summer. Carvalho was part of the Porto team guided by Mourinho that won the Champions League last season.

The Blues have been looking to strengthen their defence since the exit of Marcel Desailly, who had his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Carvalho, who has stated he wants to leave Porto, had also been linked with a switch to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants offered a reported £7m for him, a bid that fell a long way short of Porto's £20m asking price.

Since beating Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League final, Porto have lost Mourinho, Ferreira and Carvalho to Chelsea, while midfield playmaker Deco has joined Barcelona.

Carvalho enjoyed an outstanding Euro 2004 after replacing skipper Fernando Couto in the heart of Portugal's defence.

Like I said before money is such a key issue when you come for a club that doesnt have much to give its players. But hey Chelsea have made a good trade in for Desailly and now John T and Ricky C will be playing in the back.

I think RC is a good defender and he went to a club where he is going to get better at what he does. As far as getting accustomed to the Prem, I think it will take some time but he has the skill and potential.

Good pick Mr. Mourinho
