Chelsea are facing the threat of having points deducted if they are found guilty of failing to control their players. The club have been summoned to appear before a disciplinary hearing of the Football Association on Monday to explain why four of their players surrounded referee Paul Durkin after their defeat by Sheffield Wednesday last April.

The hearing will come just days after Chelsea were hit by suspensions to defender Frank Leboeuf and striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for abusing French official Pascal Garebean after their defeat by St Gallen in the UEFA Cup in Zurich.

UEFA banned the pair for two games should Chelsea qualify for European competitions next season - or either player moves to a new club in the meantime.

However, the club are now preparing to defend another misconduct charge after Marcel Desailly, Celestine Babayaro, Emerson Thome, now with Sunderland, and Didier Deschamps now at Valencia, surrounded Durkin after the final whistle at Hillsborough to voice their disapproval over his performance.

The incident occurred despite the fact that just 48 hours earlier, the club had been fined £50,000 for their part in a tunnel brawl with Wimbledon at Stamford Bridge.
