Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea

Goals: Torres 89, 90+ 3

The score didn't really reflect the true contest -- which was ugly for most of the time, I have to admit. Chelsea was the most effective of the 2 sides in the 1st half, and I feel that their game fell apart when Lampard was red carded -- to me, he deserved a yellow at most, even though the referee may well have thought that Lampard's intent was not to play the ball.

Sometimes I forget just how well these 2 sides know each other. A 0-0 result looked fair, until the last 15 minutes or so, which was really when Liverpool started taking advantage of Chelsea's misfortune. Benayoun really stood out for me, and I've probably said this before, but I'm not sure why he isn't a starter. There was a short period where he took 2 good shots, one of which forced a save from Cech. This looked to be what his team needed to wake up and to go for the 3 points.

Torres scored his 1st goal at Anfield this season in the 89th minute -- a nice header, too. His 2nd was set up by Benayoun, who seemed to toe-poke his pass after being tackled (fairly) inside the box. Rafa Benitez should be feeling a little more relaxed now, I imagine. Luck seemed to be on Liverpool's side today, and I think that Rafa knows that improvement is needed.

Torres is just such a great finisher, and coming so late in the game back to back like that is even more impressive IMO!

He's been great so far. I thought that we were lucky to get the 3 points though. Apart from the last 15 minutes, I thought that the game was pretty even. The best team in the EPL continues to be Manchester United, by some margin. The UCL is a bit different.

Portsmouth 2 - 3 Liverpool

Goals: Nugent 61 (Portsmouth), Aurelio 69 (Liverpool), Hreidarsson 77 (Portsmouth), Kuyt 84 (Liverpool), Torres 90 (Liverpool)

Rafa Benitez said after the game that some of his players were quite tired, mainly Torres, Alonso and Kuyt. It looks like the team is doing things the hard way, by fighting for the top spot with grinded and well fought-out victories. While Manchester United looks comfortable on top, the good news for Rafa is that Chelsea and Arsenal have fallen behind, with 49 and 44 points respectively. Aston Villa (51 points) is 3rd, but whether they can put any pressure on Liverpool is debatable.

Anyway, this was a good away result against a tough opponent. It's good to see guys like Aurelio, Mascherano and Alonso work hard, despite the noticeable fatigue. Rafa made a good tactical move to leave Torres on the bench, and to bring him on late in the game. In the space of a fortnight, a number of Rafa's players have played against Chelsea (EPL), Everton (FA Cup) and Portsmouth (EPL), and they now have international duty.

Well it was a good result in the end and that's all that matters but Rafa better be careful with his tinkering it almost cost them big stle in this game with the winner score with just a few mins to spare.

Just finished watching the first of between Liverpool vs Manchester City.Liverpool pretty much dominated the first half but the chances were pretty wasteful.I am loving the attacking display by Liverpool,City have been pinned in their own half for almost the whole 45 minutes.I think the best names till name for Liverpool are Torres,Kuyt and Mascherano.I hope in the second half Liverpool scores because they have certainly deserved it.This match is very important if we want to stay in the championship race.Come on reds!!!!
