Liverpool legend on Kuyt....

Tommy Smith claims Liverpool's summer signing Dirk Kuyt reminds him of Kop greats Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan.

The former centre-back has already seen enough to suggest the Dutchman has what it takes to create his own place in Anfield folklore.

"I am not suggesting that Dirk Kuyt is in their league," said Smith.

"But in the short space of time he has been at Anfield he has shown he possesses one quality that was always evident in the other two - passion.

"He has plenty of energy and pace and once he settles down, and the Reds find that fluency of last season, I think he will become a fine player and a firm favourite with the fans.

"But that passion for the game is already evident. Kuyt, like Keegan, is always on alert, always looking to link up with the play, and make himself a nuisance for defenders.

"It was his determination in winning the ball off the defender that led to Steven Gerrard's winner against Manchester City.

"He has also shown an awareness in and around the area, like Dalglish, to fasten on to a loose ball and create an opening for a teammate.

"That ability could prove invaluable as the Reds seek six points over the next four days, beginning with Portsmouth tonight and at Wigan on Saturday."
