Ulivieri laughs off EPL attack Wednesday 27 August, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veteran Coach Renzo Ulivieri responded to a damning article in The Times by blasting the Premier League as “anything but English.”

In yesterday’s edition of his column, Oliver Kay wrote that Serie A is “a retirement home for ageing footballers or a get-rich-quick scheme for those who lacked ambition” and “a long way short of the Premier League.”

The article was reproduced in La Gazzetta dello Sport and fired up former Bologna boss Ulivieri.

“It’s the pot calling the kettle black,” sniped the President of the Italian Coaches’ Association.

“England has a nice League, but if you look carefully they have foreign Coaches, the vast majority are foreign players and even foreign club owners come in from all over the world.

“I really doubt they are in any position to criticise Italian football. Besides, I certainly wouldn’t say that Ronaldinho or Andriy Shevchenko are old.”

Last year it was confirmed that the Premier League had the highest number of foreign players in its sides, while 10 of the 20 Coaches this term are not English.

Italian tactician Fabio Capello has also been hired to take charge of the England squad.

In Serie A there is only one foreign Coach this season – Jose Mourinho at Inter - and not a single overseas club owner.

I put this in the EPL thread and no replies yet. It must have struck a chord with them

I remember about 8 years ago everyone was saying the same about the EPL being a retirement village for stars. How times have changed, but I still think Serie A is a force in Europe and will return to the glory days soon.

Too bad the English could not copy the success of the Azzurri in addition to the Italian league.

The English Premier League is the best league in the world right now, Serie A being the weakest of the big 3.

Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool & Barcelona were the teams left in the latter stages of the Champions League, I mean just look at that. Toal dominance from the EPL. You cant deny that.

its starting to get broing now paul. you repeat yourself all over the forum.

Any how, just because they had one good season doesnt mean much

can you explain to me why man ure lost yesterday? can you explain why iot took liverpool 205 minutes to score against a very very average squad in the cl quialifier.

i dont see this year being as close as succesful as it was lat year in the champuions league. but you certainly cant base it all on that.

Ok right i think all this war between me and sebastian is making me say things out of impulse. To be honest Serie A is a great league just like the epl and la liga.

the only thing i will say is that the epl is probably the strongest right now, thats my opinion.

the guy that wrote that article saying serie a is a retirement home is obviously an idiot, but you find idiots in italy too, it doesnt mean everyone thinks the same as one guy.

Just a bit of trash talk, nothing really worth paying any attention to.

To be honest, serie a is looking more competitive and stronger than previous years.

Its impossible to predioct who will qualify for what at this stage.

look at how bologna newly promoted defeated the new milan at the san siro. Im afraid but excited at how things will turn out at the end.

The way the smaller teams reinforced themselves this summer was incredible.

Im will post the most importnat italian tranfers this summer.
