Lippi dreams of Brazil final

Marcello Lippi has said that he would love his Azzurri side to face Brazil in next summer’s World Cup Final. "It’s always nice to dream," he smiled.

Dreams do become reality sometimes, though, particularly in football – and for the Italy Coach his would be to face World Cup holders and current favourites Brazil in the Final in Munich next June.

"It’s always nice to dream," he said. "The whole world is anti-Brazil because the South Americans are unanimously considered to be the tournament favourites."

For most Italians, Brazil don’t represent a dream so much as a nightmare. Roberto Baggio’s penalty miss in the 1994 World Cup Final still stirs painful memories, while the Azzurri also fell at the final hurdle to Pélé’s famous 1970 side.

If Lippi’s men are to reach such heady heights next July, they will certainly have to improve on last night’s performance against the Ivory Coast.

Italy came very close to losing to African opposition for the first time in their history until Aimo Diana came to the rescue with a late equaliser.

But the former Inter Coach was pleased with the determination his new-look side showed in Geneva when their backs were against the wall.

"We showed that we have a lot of character," he declared proudly of a side that has now gone 15 games unbeaten under his guidance.

The draw for the group stages of the World Cup takes place next month and, although FIFA have not yet decided whether or not Italy will be seeded for the tournament, Lippi is understandably confident of his side’s chances.

"I am happy because there is an abundance of attacking players that are available for me to choose from," he revealed. "The Italian League boasts strengths in so many areas."

As for the sides that the Italian tactician rates the most, it is no surprise to hear which one is mentioned first.

"After Brazil, Argentina are a close second," he warned. "Then there are four or five European outfits who will all be equally as dangerous as each other in the final shake-up."

It's also my dream....It would be boring if Italy faces average team in final...But I would be happy. But nothing can compared to final with Brazil. I would be extremely satsified if we beat Brazil in final...:P
