Former Italy Under-21 Coach and current observer for Marcello Lippi’s national side Rossano Giampaglia has died at the age of 60.

The former Livorno and Sampdoria midfielder had been fighting leukaemia for some time and a sudden relapse proved fatal on Friday afternoon.

Giampaglia had been in the Azzurri set-up since 1990, acting as assistant manager to both Cesare Maldini and Marco Tardelli in the Under-21 side before taking over that squad as Coach in 1997.

He was again matched with Maldini at the 1998 World Cup and, when old friend Lippi was appointed Italy Coach, brought in as an official observer.
