Italy return to action vs Serbia Montenegro at Toronto's Sky Dome - June 8th, 2005

The Italian National team returns to action as they square off in a friendly against Serbia Montenegro at the Sky Dome in Toronto, just one hour away.

Italy will be debuting many new faces, and some veteran ones like 35 year old keeper Angelo Peruzzi, who previously thought his time on the NT was over. He has emphatically stated that he would love to go to Germany next year, even if his capacity would be third string keeper.

New faces for the Azzurri include:

Roma

Guardalben

Barzalgi

Cassetti

Danielli

Baronio

Coppola (Francis Fords's son...kidding)

Mesto

Brienza

Iaquinta

Lucarelli (Top Scorer in Serie A this season with 24 goals)

Di Michelle

Serbia Montenegro, is also bringing youth, debuting five players:

Ivanovic

Basa

Burzanovic

Rnic

Stojkovic.

This could be considered somewhat of a rematch of last years U-21 European Cup final where Italy defeated Serbia/Montenegro by a score of 3-0, as both teams are bringing key members of their respective U21 squads.

On thursdays the Azzurri travel to New York to face off against Ecuador on saturdays june 11. Ecuador has just come off a 2-0 WCQ victory over a "B" Argentinean team, and hope to carry that momentum into their meeting with the Azzurri, who they haven't faced since their 2-0 loss to Italy in World Cup 2002.

Italy's complete lineup:

Goalies: Guardalben, Peruzzi, Rome;

Defenders: Barzagli, Drawers, Chiellini, Dainelli, Large, Oddo, Zaccardo

Midfielders: Barone, Baronio, Blasi, Coppola, Esposito, Mauri, Mesto;

Attackers: Brienza, Di Michele, Iaquinta, Langella, C. Lucarelli, Tones.

*Commentary*: As said in previous bloggings, I expect that this experimental lineup will be allowed to play unimpeded by Lippi, in that he will be looking for players to augment their already strong lineup for 2006. For that reason I beleive this game will be very entertaining from a fan's perspective as previous games that debuted new talent have shown to be.
