The Italian Football Federation is considering making a bid to host the 2012 European Championships.

Italy have until 2006 to table an offer but that will only take place if the FIGC receives substantial government backing.

"In order to host Euro 2012, we would need eight cities with facilities such as airports, hotels, motorways and railways which are in good condition," stated FIGC chief Franco Carraro.

"We will also need arenas which are capable of giving high standards of comfort to the spectators. Even our best stadiums would need renovation.

"We will open negotiations with the government because if they do not have the will, the candidacy will be useless."

Italy have already hosted the tournament on two occasions in the past after the events of 1968 and 1980. The 1990 World Cup was also staged in Italy.
