Totti Vs. Zidane

Francesco Totti is as good as Real Madrid ace Zinedine Zidane according to Roma boss Fabio Capello.

The Giallorossi Coach was in the crowd for Italy’s 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday where the playmaker was the star of the show.

"Technically speaking, Totti has reached the levels of Zidane," stated the tactician.

"If Totti is physically fit then there is no doubt that he is one of the best five players in Europe."

Totti was given a free role in a 4-2-3-1 system where the capital captain laid on both of Christian Vieri’s goals.

"We used the same tactics when we won the Scudetto two years ago," continued the former Milan man. "We had Batistuta as a striker, with Delvecchio, Totti and Cafu all offering support.

"This is an ideal system to get the very best from Totti. In many ways he plays like Raul does for Real Madrid."

capello is just saying that because he coaches totti. there is absolutly no possibility that totti has reached the technical capabilities of zidane however. the mere thought of that makes me feel sorry for capello for even going there.

Just look no further than Zizou's trophy case: World Cup, European Championship, 2 scudetti, European Cup, Golden Ball, etc. etc.

Totti is no doubt a great player, perhaps the best Italian just now, but until Franco starts winning these honours he'll never be fit to even clean ZZ's boots

What does the trophy case have to do with skills?

IMO Totti is if not equal, very close to Zidane level, and IMO, he will be better in the future, Totti is 26 while Zidane is 31!

GRande Capitano!

I agree with ItalianBoy and of course, I am biased to this because Totti is my all time fave player. But I think when Totti is healthy he is one of the top 5 best players in Europe. He is as close to Zidane as anyone and in a year or two will be better than him. You always can use trophies as a factor in any comparison, but that doesn't make it accurate.

For example, just about everyone declares Joe Montana....the greatest NFL quarterback ever. When in reality, he is the winningest or best SUPER BOWL quarterback ever. Montana is one of the best ever, no question. But in my opinion, Brett Favre or Dan Marino were better than Montana. Montana gets the nod cause of all the Super Bowls, but.....Montana had Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, John Taylor, Brent Jones, and Ronnie Lott. Favre and Marino never had these Hall of Fame running backs and receivers. But this has become too NFL orientated. What I am saying is, if Totti was on those French and Juve teams...would they have won the championships they did??? I'd say yes.

We should judge players on their performances and not with a strong emphasis on team achievements. But until Totti wins the Pallone D'Oro....he is behind Zidane and not equal to him. But we know thats a popularity contest as well.....hahaha.

Your points are well-taken that team trophies don't equal individual greatness. A player like Claude Makalele has won similar honours as Zidane with France & Real, but certainly there's no comparison there.

My point was that if individual qualities like skills, leadership, goals, etc. are equal between the two, than team honours won becomes a factor. Pele, Beckenbauer, di Stefano, etc. would be remembered as great players regardless of whether they won team trophies, but they are considered legends. This is a tangible evidence of a player's quality.

Totti could very well become the heir to Zidane in Europe, I'm not disputing that romanisti...

ma these people are out of wack !! totti could win the next 5 balon d'or he will never even be a fraction of what zidane is now however as a player, nevermind individual achievements. zidane does it all, he's a midfield general who defends, attacks, playmaker, scorer of not many goals but 98% of them are clutch so IMO they're worth 5 a piece, and above all else he's a leader who's an incredible provider of the intangibles which need to be brought forth to a side or shall we say a successful side that is. BIG MATCH WINNER mates go look at the webster's dictionary you'll see his picture right beside the word DECISIVE. and this, along with his containers of trophies easily make him one of the GREATEST of all time.

romanista, totti in a few more years just may be better than zidane. but that is only because zidane will be three years older and entering the twilight of his career. otherwise zidane in his day totti cannot even dream about.

so totti is not a winner?.....or a leader?.....He is right up there with zidane , not saying hes better but u are obviously biased against Totti as I might be biased towards him....but ur hate is far greater........yes and capello is a world class coach and u say u feel sorry that he had to say that?......he only said it cause he coaches him?.....u think capello is some little kid who says things that he doesnt mean?.....well regardless totti is very good and so is zidane....keep hating

hey stupid did i say totti's not a winner/leader ???? just because you don't have an argument don't go putting words in my mouth because you're only tarnishing your credibility. or lack thereof to be specific.

i'll have you know nonetheless that i don't hate totti as much as you'd like to believe. i in fact think he's a good player, solid playmaker who's learning how to get himself into good quality scoring positions. what i do hate though is silly blissfully ignorant totti fans who have the audacity to mention totti in the same breathe as the great one. frankly, that is simply misguided, poorly thought out and just flat out annoying. so save your silly opinions for someone who cares. because reasonable fans such as myself don't have the time for them.
