OFFICIAL: Figo stays with Inter

Sunday 10 June, 2007

Luis Figo will remain as a player for another year and then take on a directorial role at Inter, announced the club.

The Portuguese veteran had originally been set to join Arabian side Al Ittihad in the summer, but he said they “broke promises” so the deal fell through.

He had taken two weeks to make a decision, insisting the only two options were another season at San Siro or retirement.

“Luis Figo has confirmed his desire to play another season with Inter, and on the basis of agreements already made, will renew his contract until 30 June 2008,” read a statement from the Nerazzurri.

“At the end of next season, Figo will put his great experience and professionalism at the service of the club to take care of international relations.”

This is good news and I like that he will stay with the club after retirement. It also means that Inter probably only have to sign one new attacking midfielder.

Yes, let's hope that Mancini and co aren't putting their trust in Figo for the whole season. We need a serious contender for his position if we are to succeed in CL as well as serie A.

agreed. i dont expect Figo to play as well as this season. i think he'll be to us like maldini is to milan, as in playing imp games but needs to take quite a few rests. anyway i still want a kick ass midfield signing

Yup, agree with you both. Of course, one of the reasons Figo originally wanted to go to Saudi Arabia was so that he wouldn't have to play as often or train as vigorously. He was hoping for that final easy paycheck before retirement. So I'd have to guess that he won't mind playing a less important role now for Inter.

Inter should sign someone young to rotate with Figo. My vote is for Nasri, but now that Marseille have already cashed in on Ribery, it's difficult to see them selling their other star, especially since they'll be in the Champions League this year.

Yep good news, but certainly we need some reinforcement. Figo could be influtential in deciding some small games, and coming in as a substitute and changing game for our benefit during big games.

Differently from Maldini, he needs to have more stamina & better speed as he is an attacking winger.

It remains a little worrying though that we still haven't signed a wide player of any sort this season .
