Chelsea leading race for Ballack

Chelsea are the hot favourites to sign Michael Ballack, according to the Bayern Munich midfielder's agent.

Michael Becker told BBC Sport: "Nothing has been signed, but there will be ongoing contact with Chelsea. There is strong interest from both sides.

"The trend is in this direction (to move to Chelsea).

"Michael had initially been very keen on Real Madrid. But the leadership changes there in the last few months mean we don't know what's happening."

Michael will continue his career with a side that will win the Champions League

Real sacked coach Wanderley Luxemburgo in December last year and their president, Florentino Perez, stepped down earlier this week.

Becker said: "There has been a change in the whole set-up at Real and we don't know where we stand - it's very confusing."

Ballack, 29, will be a free agent in the summer when his contract at Bayern Munich expires.

An Italian newspaper claimed on Thursday that the player's representatives had held talks with Inter Milan.

But Becker rubbished the story.

"Michael will continue his career with a side that will win the Champions League," he said.

"He definitely will not go to Inter Milan. He would only move to a club where he has a better chance of winning the Champions League than at Bayern.

"Inter are currently third in Serie A, whereas Bayern are top in the German league."

Is that the truth that Inter has to face, or will Ballack's agent regret saying that what do you guys think?

This guy is full to the brim with nothing but steaming BS! Why in the hell would a team who just rediculously overpayed for Essien, and already have Frank Lampard in their ranks sign Ballack? Only reason I can think of is Makelele retires but he's playing as strong as he's ever been this season. All this is, is a front to probably encourage Real Madrid or some other team to sign him.

He is playing all of the sides off against each other. He has already stated that he won't go to Inter or Chelsea. Madrid I don't think have the necessary lure either. Chelsea are the most likely destination for him. Essien hasn't been as good as people were expecting. Ballack, Lampard and Makelele would make one hell of a midfield. Makelele is getting old and therefore they will want to start re-organising their midfield for the future. After one season Essien can step into that role.

What the agent said was not insulting because the agent's opinions don't matter. In any case, I don't think Inter should increase their offer to Ballack. They shouldn't lose their heads in the buildup to all this. Perhaps this is what Moratti meant when he said, 'its under control' or something like that.

Ballack will be 30 next year.
