Espanyol demand they be awarded SuperCopa

August 19, 2006

Espanyol have lodged a formal complaint to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), claiming Barcelona fielded an ineligible line-up in the first leg of their Supercopa clash on Thursday.

Espanyol, the Copa del Rey winners, want to see their 1-0 defeat overturned and the trophy awarded to them after Carles Puyol and Xavi played for Barca, just three days after pulling out of international duty with Spain through injury.

This, Espanyol claim, flouts FIFA rules, which state that players who withdraw from national-team duty because of injury should not play for their clubs for at least five days.

Club director Pedro Tomas said: "We want them to accept the complaint and for justice to take its course.

"If they accept the line-up is ineligible, Espanyol should be declared the winners of the match and the trophy."

The second leg is scheduled to be played on Sunday.

The Spanish FA rejected the first complain before the second leg so if I were an Espanyol fan I wouldn't keep too much hope!
