"Barca's youth team star Giovani Dos Santos is back home after winning the U-17 World Cup. The youngster went to the competition a relative unknown, but was voted the second best player of the tournament.

Just a few weeks ago, Dos Santos was training in the Youth B team with the rest of the boys on the pitches next to the Mini Estadi -a promising player, who his coach Sergio Lobera believed had the strength and technical ability to go far in the game. The 16-year-old was back in Barcelona this Thursday morning, being hailed as a star following his performances in helping Mexico win the tournament in Peru.

Feet firmly on the ground

Speaking as he arrived at the airport, Giovani told reporters: "I'm very pleased for myself and my country about winning the tournament", before insisting: "I'm very happy to be back in Barcelona. What I want is to become a Barca player". Despite his new found fame, Giovanni was keeping his feet firmly on the ground: "I don't want to talk about moving up into another category at the club. Right now I'm a Youth B team player and if I need to change then that's something the coaching staff will decide".

Long line of success

Giovani Dos Santos is the latest in an illustrious line of youngsters who've come through the Barca youth team ranks to impress in World Cups: www.fcbarcelona.com/...cias/n05100307.shtml at their age levels: current Barca C coach Juan Carlos Pérez Rojo was a star at the Youth World Cup in 1979 and he was followed by Xavi, Gabri and most recently Messi, all of whom put in eye catching performances in Under-20 World Cups, with the Spanish/Argentinean youngster winning the Player of the Tournament Award in the summer."

Back in action for Barca

Barca fans will have their first chance to see Giovani this Sunday at 10'15, when the Youth B team play Castelldefells on pitch number 4 at the Miniestadi.
