Madrid sign Lassana Diarra

Portsmouth and Real Madrid have agreed a transfer fee to take Lassana Diarra from Fratton Park to the Bernabeu, but the amount differs according to the source.

According to The Sun, Pompey are set to receive £24 million (€26.7 million), while the Daily Mail reports that Los Blancos will part with £18 million (€20 million).

Either way, the south-coast club are set to make a tidy profit on the £5.5 million (€6.1 million) paid to Arsenal to sign the midfielder last January.

It is thought that Los Merengues will officially announce the deal within the next 48 hours and that the French international, who can also fill in at right-back, will complete the switch on January 2.

A delighted Juande Ramos, the Real Madrid head coach, is quoted as saying: "The big players are already in the Champions League and cannot be signed.

"Diarra is a player I know well and I would like a player like him here."

The news comes as a blow to the transfer plans of English duo Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, the former in particular as it is believed they were willing to offer more money to sign the 23-year-old.

how long is the contract? i would have signed him until June only. Diarra, the original will be back next season and he's a beast so he won't be needed next season unless he wants the bench.

Also, why did he leave big clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea? is he good? because if he would be he wouldn't leave. I just hope he does well

basically, he left arsenal because he couldn't force his way into the first team. flamini was in fantastic form, and with the euro's around the corner lassana wanted to make sure he was in the mix for les bleus ( france ).

my memory is a little hazy as to why he left chelsea. wouldn't be surprised if it was because of a similar reason, i.e. getting more games.

from what i've seen of him he looks a very useful player, and should be able to do a job for madrid until mahamadou returns. don't think he's got anything on the malian though, and it's only a matter of time before he's warming the bench or moving on to another club.

on a personal level, i don't like him at all...extremely arrogant.

by the way...when have you seen a professional footballer sign a 6 month contract ? maybe a loan move would have been better. you can always blame ramos if things don't work out with him .

lol i meant loan, i know no players can be signed for 6 months. Plus, he's not even needed, idk why he was signed. We need wingers because the only one we have is Robben, the rest are trash.

lol i just went to Marca and this guy wants to get payed more than S. Ramos? @#%^ him, no way, he should at Portsmouth.

He's not even good i bet, the fact that he lft Chelsea and Arsenal already say so, he doenst have the quality to be part of a big team and hes coming here? no way. Madrid should just cancel everything, no wonder there's no news about him bc he wants to get paid like a superstar.
