Real's poor performaces : causes and cures

Feanor2010-05-09 14:58:59 +0000 #1
In your opinion, what was the reason why Real never had any achievements during the last 3 seasons ?

Well, the main culprit, in my opinion, is Perez. For many reasons. The first wrong movements comes in 2002, when Perez brings Ronaldo. He is a very good player, but Real did not need him. The team was strong enough in the attack. But this would not have been so serious if it had not been followed by other mistakes. One after another :

1. What happens in 2003 ? Perez bring Beckham. Again, a player which Real did not need on the pitch. But then it happens something else which, because of the fuss caused by Beckham, went unnoticed at the moment. Makelele left. This was serious. Makelele does not shine like Zidane, but he was one of the best defensive players in Europe. And Real suffered soon.

2. There is no balance between defense and attack. If Perez had the best offensive players, the defenders were all crap. A team who wants to win trophies should have at least one 1 top class player in the attack, midfield and defence. Here are some examples :

Juventus in 2003 : Del Piero, Nedved, Thuram.

Barca now : Ronaldinho and Eto'o in the attack, Deco and Xavi in the midfield, Puyol in the defense.

3. The age of the players. The moment when Real starts to underperform in spring 2004. What happens ? In my opinion, the key players from Real's midfield, Figo and Zidane, both above 31 years old, can't stand the effort anymore and collapse. At the age of 32 a player does not have the vitality from 25-28. When the midfield has problems, the strikers stop scoring.

4. Perez prolonged the contracts of his players instead of looking for replacement. He did not understand something very important : in modern football, much faster and much more exhausting, very few players above 32 can perform well at a high level. During Di Stefano era, it was possible : players had to play less and the matches were not that exhausting as today, as the pace was slower. Now it is not. In 2003, Perez should have started to look for replacements for Figo and Zidane, because this needs time, it's hard to find a suitable player who could take place of such legends. Perez did not do it and Real paid the consequences.

The irony was that, in 2003, the best replacement for Zidane was looking for a move to a better team : Ronaldinho. Perez could have had him, since, in 2003, Real had a great advantage on transfer market, most players prefering Real due to its reputation. But Perez was seduced by the marketing possibilities offered by Beckham and the results were bad.

Other opinions ?

About solution, I think Real should reconstruct its team, but starting from the defense this time. Sergio Ramos should get his chance because he is young and he can improve. But Mejia has no place in a team like Real. Also, Real needs to look for a replacement for Roberto Carlos.

Also in the midfield is extremely important to bring reinforcements. Zidane is leaving. I really don't know who can replace him. There are 2 options : Kaka, but I don't think he would leave Milan, or Gerrard, but I don't know how he will adapt to Primera Division.

Third and most important, the new management should NEVER bring player just to sell shirt again.

BECKHAM SELLS SHIRTS THOUGH. YEA, MAKALELE IS GREAT INDEED.

NOT EVERYONE IS ROMARIO OR PAOLO MALDINI

I READ ABOUT THIS. APPARENTLY, RONALDINHO WAS TOO "UGLY" TO GRACE THE REAL MADRID JERSEY, AND WE ALL KNOW HOW BECKHAM IS THE POSTER BOY FOR METROSEXUALS. THE END RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. BARCA = CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL. REAL = STRUGGLED TO QUALIFY FOR NEXT YEARS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

LETS BE REAL HERE..........

KAKA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. STEVEN GERRARD IS............OKAY, IS LIVERPOOL.

I DO AGREE RAMOS IS A GREAT PLAYER, BUT PERSONALLY, IF I WERE HIM, ID LEAVE. REAL IS A MESS. BUT I ADMIRE HIS PASSION. THEY DESPERATELY NEED TO SIGN 1 CB, AND ONE MIDFIELDER. I BELIEVE GRAVESON, IF HE STAYS, CAN STILL DO THE JOB THAT MAKALELE DID.

CICINHO WAS WORTHLESS. GRAVESON CANT DO ANYTHING WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE 1 CENTRAL DEFENDER AND THE REST ALL PUSH UP. ITS POINTLESS TO BLAME GRAVESON.

THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE. SIGN ONE BIG NAME CENTRAL DEFENDER TO PARTNER WOODGATE (CONSIDERING HE GETS FIT, IF EVER). MOVE RAMOS TO THE RIGHT WING(HIS ORIGINAL AND BEST POSITION) AND SIGN A LEFT BACK. PUT GRAVESON IN THE HOLE WITH GUTI, PLAY CICINHO ON THE RIGHT, AND SIGN A LEFT WINGER.

NOW FOR STRIKERS.........IDK, BOTH RONALDO AND RAUL SHOULD GO, BUT THEY WONT. WELL SEE..........

THOUGHTS IN BOLD/CAPS

Not all what he said is crap, but...some of it..for example Ronaldinho was to ugly... Woodgate...Why do you want Ramos to leave? Raul maybe...althouogh he is a symbol, but Ronnie...?

Just one more thing...Real Madrid is not like Inter Minalo. They didn`t want KAKA because he has a funny name and now they regret this. The rebuiling of Real Madrid is not starting in bringing beautiful faces, but talented footballers. At Real Madrid the look isn`t important allthough Beckham has a great hair !

Well, in my case, abour Ronaldo leaving, I'm a little biased, I don't like strikers after the age of 30. Although there are some who can still play well, like Batistuta, Inzaghi or Romario, but, well, let's say they are not to my tastes.

And Real should get rid of Woodgate, he is too injury prone to be realiable.

Juan, Fer u both have excellent points!

However i slightly disagrees on some of them.

1st.... we DID and DO have world class players in all lines

SAMUEL - ZIZOU - RONALDO

This season was terrible due to one reason.... Our tactics philosophy.

We went away from playing a wide play, with no wingers. Not much to do now cause we dont have the players to play that kind of game.

IMO Becks is a terrible investment. His work with Salgado makes our right side completely dead. Ok, his crossings are good. TUFF SHIT IS THAT WE DONT HAVE ANY STRIKERS WITH AIRIAL ABILITY!

We should get players like Joaquin, Vicente, C. Ronaldo.

I really beleive that the wingers are our main concern

I agree with you on Zidane and Ronaldo, but since when is Samuel a world-class player ? Even at Roma, he was only a good defender, no way world-class like Nesta, Thuram (when he was younger) or Puyol, and at Real he played poorer than he did in Italy, don't know the reasons.

You did have a world-class back, Roberto Carlos, but the problem was that he forgot too often about defensive.

And also because Zidane ran out of fuel, I would say.

i'll bring up a few points:

Cicinho, Salgado & Carlos --> like what was mentioned above, forgets about their defensive duties. Often leaving the centrebacks on their own. Lucky for Madrid to have Casillas.

Gravesen/ Garcia --> not enough driving force. Most of the driving are done by Zidane and to a certain extent, Guti. If only the holding midfielders can carry this out, Zidane would definitely be able to stretch the opposition wider and allow more space for Guti in the centre...

Ronaldo/Raul --> too wasteful.... it's really very very annoying to see so many crosses coming in from the wings but no finishing by headers. Through balls are rare as we know most opposition will play man marking of ronaldo and raul. so, spaces are closed down and there won't be much space for your strikers to pounce on.... start training at heading for heaven sake.
Feanor2010-05-09 18:25:15 +0000 #8
Indeed, Raul and Ronaldo are crap at heading... I don't remember ever seeing Ronaldo scoring with the head...

On the other, Cicinho I really like. He is the only player from the new signings whom I think he confirmed until now.
