Atletico axe coach as Burgos exits

MADRID, May 25 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid announced on Tuesday that coach Gregorio Manzano would not be renewing his contract and that goalkeeper German Burgos was also leaving the Primera Liga club.

'Both Manzano and myself agreed that it was best for us not to renew the contract,' said club president Enrique Cerezo. 'A great person has worked for this club and it was an honour to have him here.'

Manzano said he had made a decision not to stay at the club over two months ago and believed that it was time to move on.

'It was a very intense experience,' he said. 'There have been some disappointments but also some successes and all I hope is that this season forms the basis of future triumphs.'

Cerezo said the club had not yet decided on who would replace Manzano as coach.

Manzano signed a one-year contract with Atletico at the start of the season after steering Real Mallorca to triumph in the King's Cup and to a creditable ninth place in the Primera Liga.

But although the team spent much of the campaign in the upper reaches of the table they failed to qualify for the UEFA Cup and had to settle for a place in the Intertoto competition after finishing seventh in the standings.

Manzano is thought to be one of the leading candidates to take over at Malaga whose coach Juande Ramos is also expected to leave his post in the next few days.

Former Argentina international Burgos joined from Mallorca in 2001 and helped the club return to the Primera Liga after two seasons in the second division.

He was in the headlines last season after undergoing an operation to deal with a cancerous growth in his kidney, but made a rapid recovery to regain his first-team place.

This season he had a string of injury problems and was dropped in January after a poor performance in the 4-0 defeat by Sevilla in the first leg of a King's Cup quarter-final.

Atletico appoint Ferrando as coach

MADRID, May 31 (Reuters) - Cesar Ferrando will be coach of Atletico Madrid next season, the club confirmed on Monday.

The former Albacete coach, who has been given a one-year contract, replaces Gregorio Manzano who left Atletico last week.

'I have no doubt that he will be a very good coach,' Atletico sporting director Toni Munoz told a news conference in Madrid.

'He has done his job very well at Albacete, he is ambitious and has shown that he can work well with teams in the past. I am sure he will become one of the leading Spanish coaches.'

Although Atletico spent much of last season in the upper reaches of the table, they failed to qualify for the UEFA Cup and had to settle for a place in the lesser Intertoto competition after finishing seventh.

Ferrando has received widespread acclaim for keeping Albacete in the top flight despite the club's limited resources.

The 44-year-old began his coaching career with third division Gandia and the Valencia B team before taking over at Albacete in 2002.

He guided the club to a return to the top flight after a seven-year stint in the second division and went on to defy the pre-season predictions of relegation by leading them to a creditable 14th-place finish in the Primera Liga.

Atletico agree deal to sign Perea

MADRID, June 11 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors have agreed a deal to sell Colombia defender Luis Perea to Atletico Madrid, the Argentine club's president Mauricio Macri said on Friday.

'The deal between the clubs is complete,' Macri told Radio Marca. 'Now all that is left is for Atletico to agree personal terms with the player.'

Marca reported that the 25-year-old international will sign a four-year deal with the Spanish Primera Liga club for a transfer fee of close to €4 million ($4.79 million).

Boca president Macri, who negotiated the deal in Madrid on Friday morning, said the defender would be a valuable addition to the Spanish side.

'He's very strong, quick and is able to play anywhere in the back four,' he said.

Atletico finished in seventh position in the Primera Liga and have qualified for the Intertoto Cup.

Salva returns to Atletico on loan

MADRID, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Valencia striker Salva Ballesta is delighted to be back at Atletico Madrid after agreeing a one-season loan deal at his former club on Thursday.

'Atletico have always treated me very well and I'm really happy to be here once again,' he told a news conference in Madrid.

Salva, who topped the scoring charts in the Primera Liga and the second division in consecutive seasons in 2000 and 2001, left Atletico three years ago after helping the club return to the top flight.

He signed a six-year deal with Valencia for a fee of $10.5 million in July 2001 but was never able to establish himself in the first team under then coach Rafa Benitez.

He had a brief and unsatisfactory period on loan at Bolton Wanderers in 2003 but only recovered his form last season when he was loaned out to Malaga.

He finished the season with a total of 19 league goals and earned a recall to the Spanish national team although he missed out on selection for Euro 2004.

Salva rejoined Valencia for their pre-season preparations but new coach Claudio Ranieri made it clear that the 29-year-old did not feature in his plans for the forthcoming campaign.

Althetico Madrid announce Sosa deal

MADRID, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Uruguay midfielder Marcelo Sosa has signed a three-year deal with Atletico Madrid, the Primera Liga club said on Saturday.

Sosa, who played for Uruguay in the recent Copa America, played for Spartak Moscow last season but recently rescinded his contract with the Russian club.

'I'm delighted to have signed for one of the biggest clubs in Spain,' said the 26-year-old who will team up with fellow new signing Peter Luccin in the centre of the Atletico midfield.

'My main aim is to help Atletico qualify for Europe next season,' he said. 'I don't like losing and I've come here to win titles with Atletico.'

Atletico finished in seventh place in the Primera Liga last season to qualify for the Intertoto Cup. They reached one of the finals of the competition, but trail fellow Spaniards Villarreal 2-0 after the first leg.
