Villarreal have completed the sale of striker Lucho Figueroa to Argentina's River Plate.

River have agreed a fee of £1.4 million for 50 per cent of Lucho's transfer rights for the next 18 months. At the end of next season, Figueroa will return to Villarreal. Pumas were also interested in Figueroa, but dropped their pursuit yesterday.

Injured Riquelme seeks advice in Argentina

Associated Press

Posted: 3 hours ago

VILLARREAL, Spain (AP) - Villarreal said Tuesday that midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has traveled to Argentine to seek specialist advice on his left thigh injury.

Villarreal couldn't say how long Riquelme would be sidelined. The team meets Glasgow Rangers in a second-round first-leg game of the Champions League on Feb. 22.

"Riquelme is always keen to play and will do everything to be fit so I hope he'll make a quick recovery," Villarreal doctor Juan Albors said.

The Argentina international played a major part in Villarreal's third-place finish in last season's Spanish league, winning the team a debut in the Champions League.

Injured Pires to miss six months

Written by: Chris Nixon

VILLARREAL, Aug 22 (SW) – Spanish side Villarreal have suffered another huge setback ahead of their opening Primera Liga clash with Real Madrid this weekend.

Scans have confirmed that summer signing Robert Pires will be out of action for six months after tearing a cruciate ligament in his left knee during a pre-season match with Cadiz at the weekend.

Pires’ injury is undoubtedly a blow to the club, but he is the second player in a matter of days to get injured, with Argentinean defender Gonzalo Rodriguez also suffering a cruciate tear.

“It's the same injury as Gonzalo has,” confirmed disappointed Villarreal President Fernando Roig.

“He will have to undergo surgery.”

Pires only joined The Yellow Submarines this summer from English side Arsenal, penning a two-year deal.

I don't know that they really could use him, but this isn't good for the team, especially now that also their other left winger Sorin has left

Thats one of the reasons Arsenal wouldn't give Pires the deal he wanted.
