Demichelis to extend Bayern contract

FRANKFURT, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Argentina midfielder Martin Demichelis has agreed a contract extension with Bayern Munich until 2010, the Bundesliga champions announced on Thursday.

The 24-year-old joined Bayern from River Plate as a defender in 2003 but did not win a regular place until he switched to a holding midfield player midway through last season.

Since then he has been one of the club's most consistent performers and has broken into the Argentina squad.

'Martin has developed over recent months into an important member of the team,' said Bayern coach Felix Magath.

Bayern's eagerness to get a new contract signed 18 months before the end of Demichelis's current deal in 2007 is a sign of how highly he is rated.

The Bundesliga club generally leave negotiations until much later, with 10 players out of contract at the end of this season.

Among them is Germany captain Michael Ballack, who has asked to be given until the middle of November to decide whether to accept a new offer or move on.
