Good Stuff

Just took my first BJJ class. That was some of the most fun I have had in a while.

Awesome to here. I've been looking around at BJJ schools since I graduated from college about a year ago and I think I'm finally at the point where I can (barely) afford to take some classes. Hopefully, I'll be able to say I took my first class soon.

If you get a chance, why don't you post some more details on how the first class went? Did you feel overmatched the entire class? Do you think your knowledge of MMA gave you a little bit of a head start?

I thought I did decent. I learned basic BJJ and MT in the police acedemy and I have also learned a great deal of stuff on my own. This was good because the didn't teach any basic things, so I was glad I already knew stuff. I caught on to the different things they taught in the class pretty well, and was getting it much quicker than the guy I was partnered with, who said he had been going for a little over a month.

After about an hour they had us start grappeling with each other. The guy I was partnered with was about my size but I am very strong and athletic, plus since I was learning the stuff faster than him I assumed I was going to own him. We started and I shot in and he caught me with a guillotine choke right away and tapped me in about 12 seconds. I learned from that and for rest of the time I pretty much handled him. I subbed him once and kept dominate position most of the time, although I didn't do a whole lot with it.

There were a couple other guys that it was about the same. I didnt set the world on fire but did well. I was proud of that since it was my first day and these guys have been going for a while.

Then I grappled with this dude that just won a tourney last week. He owned me. I think he subbed me 8 times in 4 minutes, and it would have been more if I would not have been so much stronger than him. He was very cool and showed me a bunch of stuff after that though.
