I can't remember if I have brought this up before, but I saw a news item today announcing the date of UFC 120 in England this Autumn. Fine and dandy. Then I noticed "120" and I realized just how absurd this is starting to get. The number convention was fine at first when every UFC actually did produce a brand new champion.
From UFC 1-8 and then UFC 10-12 you had individual tournaments to crown a UFC tournament champion. Thus, each one was an individual championship in its own right.
Once the tournaments ended it became rather moot to continue the tradition.
Now, especially the coming of television specials on Spike TV and Versus, we have reached the point when the number convention needs to go. It doesn't take too much creativity to give each new event a new name, or just come up with annual names. ("The Ultimate" is a good one for a year end super show, and they could start holding only one major event in Las Vegas every year to bring back the "Victory in Vegas" name annually...)
Does anyone else believe it is time that naming of MMA events goes to the wayside?
