Shogun says Rampage was offered to replace Rashad but declined

That's what the champion told Tatame TV:

"The UFC thought in other alternatives, but it didn't work out. For some reason he (Jackson) didn't accepted it. I'll have to change my training because he's a lot different from Rashad, much taller, and it'll be a great challenge. He's been surprising everybody in the UFC, defeated everybody with easy, and it'll be a tough fight for me."

And the plot thickens. Once Rashad Evans was forced to drop out of his main event title fight against Mauricio Rua at UFC 128 on March 19, the UFC had to do some scrambling. According to company head honcho Dana White, that included asking Jon Jones if he wanted to take his teammate's spot right after defeating Ryan Bader at UFC 126 this past Saturday night (Feb. 5). "Bones" quickly accepted and now, at the ripe old age of 23, will fight for his first championship. If it seemed like a somewhat odd move and you were of the mind they were rushing the young up-and-comer into the title picture, well, it looks like you weren't the only one. If "Shogun" is to be believed, Jones wasn't the first choice to fight him for his title. That honor was to go to Quinton Jackson, who is currently scheduled to throw hands against Thiago Silva at UFC 130 on May 28. Apparently, "Rampage" said no thanks, electing not to at least attempt to avenge his embarrassing first round knockout loss to the champ back in 2005 while the two were in Pride. Whew. Got all that? Considering is proclivity for avenging his two knockout losses to Wanderlei Silva, is this news surprising to anyone?

this will probably be met with a lot of cries of cowardice, but i don't think it's that. he's one of the few men on the planet that never feared chuck or wand, which was kind of odd given what wand did to him. twice.

i think rampage's head is just permanently in a weird place. he says he never wants to fight again, then he fights again. he says he doesn't care about winning or titles.. which i guess is consistent with this decision. he does usually care about revenge, but obviously not right now. i guess he'd just want a full camp devoted specifically to shogun.

rampage i feel just doesnt believe he is ready. He lost the rashad fight which could primarily be due to the layoff and he felt he lost that Machida fight given his post fight remarks.

He probably just feels that he needs another win or two.

That's kinda what I was thinking too....Given Rampage's history of instability, odd behavior, and back-and-forth talk, he shouldn't be encouraged to suddenly change up his plans and take on the anxiety involved with switching things like this up.

Let him focus on Thiago and get in a full camp. If he wins he is sitting pretty to get a title shot that he can fully prepare for.

Based on a number of his previous comments regarding other fighters, I have to suspect this is another bad breath issue.

This is actually a good decision on Rampage's part, so I have to think that it comes from his trainer or coach.

Im actually much more excited for Bones/Shogun then I would be for Rampage/Shogun so this works for me. Should Bones win, I think Rampage/Bones would be an excellent follow up match although Ill probably hang myself after Rampage repeats "black on black crime" a million times on tv.
