What is Going on with the Japanese MMA Scene?

I simply don't have enough knowledge about what is going on over there to make sense of the cultural climate and MMA right now. In the past years we've discussed various events related to the downfall of MMA over there, and those events just seem to keep on coming. I've heard about Yakuza, sponsors, tv deals, etc...but it's all dicey. Was the height of PRIDE over there just a bubble that was bound to burst? Is this a larger economic issue? A cultural one? All of the above?

So, what I was hoping to achieve here is getting some info on exactly what is happening and how things have all went down.

Can anyone produce some sort of time-line that would facilitate discussion and bring about a more thorough understanding of how things went from where they were to where they are now?

I know we have at least one member from Japan, and a few more that have always been knowledgeable about what has been going on over there....Any lurkers out there with first hand knowledge?

i read the UFC has been trying to contact Akiyama

dont think they have made contact with him. i know i've made jokes about hoping fighters dont pull out of ufc 128 for me next week, but in this case i really just hope akiyama is okay and that fighting would be the last thing on his mind.

Thanks. I missed all of the year end stuff because I spent weeks preparing for a major comprehensive exam...I basically missed about 4 weeks of the world between mid December and mid January.

I'm definitely not up on the JMMA scene, but what I have gathered from the little I have read is that TV ratings are the equivelant of PPV here. The ratings have been worse by the event, and the major sponsors have been falling out. That combined with the fact they are hemmoring money to the point they can't even pay their fighters pretty much spells the end for orgs like SRC. Dream won't be far behind, and there has been a recent scandal exposed regarding shooto's inner financial workings.
