Frank Mir is picking Brock

split decision2011-10-30 20:24:38 +0000 #1
As we get closer to the fight that has me more pumped than any other this year, and one that hopefully will not get derailed by injury like so many others, Frank Mir is taking Brock to beat Overeem:

"Honestly, I think Brock will win pretty easily. I think we’re going to see the closest thing to a grappler versus striker match you’ll see nowadays. Brock is going to cover up; maybe throw one jab. He’ll rush Overeem to the cage, reach down for a leg and rip him down.... I don’t think he’s going to get off his back. I’d be very shocked -- I’d applaud Overeem if he got off his back."

I don't see it going down the way Mir thinks, in the event of a Brock win. Brock should absolutely not go for a shot if he wants to take Overeem down, as he has a very nasty guillotine. What Brock should do, is work the greco, and use a body lock to get a take down.

Overeem's guillotine isn't exactly going to work against someone with a takedown like Brocks. I think this goes down the exact way that Mir sees it.

Of course you do.

It could go down like that, or it could go down like Duffy vs. Reem.

Duffy and Brock are not at all similar, so I wouldn't expect to see that. What makes me curious is whether Brock will try to go spaz mode early, and make an ill advised shot, catching a knee and or guillotine, or if he will sort of plod his way into Overeem, and wear him out against the cage. In the first scenario, Brock runs the risk of getting hit mid shot, and hurt bad. In the other scenario, Brock runs the risk of being too stationary and being hit. I'd like to see a sort of Chael Sonnen approach, where Brock rushes Overeem, get's inside the pocket and grapplesmashes. We shall see though.
