Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold is slated to defend his belt against former UFC veteran Keith Jardine on Jan. 7, MMA Fighting has confirmed with sources close to the fight. The title fight is expected to headline the organization's first event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Strikeforce has yet to officially announce the card or any fights signed for it as of Thursday evening.

Rockhold was expected to meet Tim Kennedy in his first title defense, but according to sources, Kennedy couldn't commit to the fight due to an undisclosed injury.

Rockhold (8-1) won the title in September when he defeated Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza via unanimous decision. The American Kickboxing Academy member has won his last seven fights in a row.

Jardine (17-9-2) fought Gegard Mousasi to a draw in his Strikeforce debut in April. This fight would mark his first at 185 pounds. "The Dean of Mean" is 2-1-1 since his release from the UFC in June 2010.

Look, I thought Jardine did better than expected and better even than most people say he did against Moussasi. I understand too that it's a shorter than usual 5 week notice. I know Strikeforce's talent pool at MW was never incredibly deep, and the loss of Shields to the UFC didn't help and you couldn't really give Jacare an immediate rematch, making it a very shallow division.

But Jardine? Really? Even pulling Shamrock out makes more sense. And no, pulling Shamrock out doesn't make much sense, before someone misreads that. And yes, I may be exaggerating for effect.

Yikes! Jardine gets a title shot by being able to take punishment aka the Homer Simpson strategy.

Jardine finally wins a title.

LOL @ getting a title shot after a loss (yeah, yeah, it was a draw...)

Rockhold looked awfully damn good in his last fight. He seems to be a real talent. Jardine we know is inconsistent and is destined for "journeyman" status in the annals of MMA history.

I'll take Rockhold by TKO in round three.

Unless Rockhold lost his left hand in an unfortunate farming accident that I am unaware of, I'm picking him.

Rockhold by left hook KO.

BTW, my prediction for every Keith Jardine fight from now on is (insert fighter) by left hook KO.

Fighting against Damien maia? Left hook KO.

He can't block 'em, and his chin can't take 'em.
