This baffles me.

I'm also a little confused by this matchmaking. It makes little sense for either guy.

For Davis, Rashad represents an opponent that he matches up very poorly with and will likely upset his rise in the LHW division. Rashad is one of the few guys at 205 that Phil will have great difficulty using his wrestling against. That leaves this fight being contested mostly on the feet. Unfortunately for Phil, he's one of the few guys that Rashad will have a clear advantage against standing.

For Rashad, this fight doesn't make sense simply because Davis would seem like a step down to almost anyone especially after he's been waiting 20 years for his title shot.

That said, from watching the two in a number of fights, I think Davis might have slightly more effective wrestling. If he can make this fight very physical he can mitigate his weakness and take advantage of one of Rashad's: cardio. If Thiago Silva can gas Evans as bad as he did, it makes me think that Phil has a decent shot at edging out a close decision.

Makes perfect sense. Hendo gets winner of Lyoto/Jones and this tests where Phil is at right now.

I like the matchup. It doesnt make much sense imo - but whatever. I figured Rashad was going to wait for the Jones/Machida winner - but I'm thinking maybe the UFC got tired of it and just told him to take a fight.

You're right, this is a big test for Davis. He's 27 and coming off knee surgery. If he wins, it's huge. If he looks competitive in losing a close match with Rashad, he'll still be a contender. If he gets tooled, then the luster comes off and he has a lot of work ahead of him.
