Interim belt or strip the champ if he can't defend?

This is a good topic for discussion beyond just GSP being injured.

Forget who the current champ is and think of it in general terms.

If a belt can't be defended twice a year due to injury what should happen?

I think there are 2 ways to deal with this, add more as you see fit.

1) Injured champ retains the belt even if off hurt a year or more. An interim belt is created and when the original champ is healthy, the two belts are reunited in a fight.

2) Strip the belt off the injured champ if he can't defend at least once a year and the top two contenders fight for the belt.

Once healthy, the ex-champ becomes the no 1 contender and gets the the first available shot at regaining the belt.

No 1 is the current UFC model. I would like to see a change to no 2 to keep the belt in play.

I think the belt should be defended twice a year but can see the arguement for once a year allowing a bit more leeway if a champ has nagging minor injuries. By making defense of the belt the priority, I think it makes the belt more important and not less.

If a fighter can't stay healthy in order to defend the belt then why should all the other fighters and fans be penalized by having the "real" belt held in limbo?

An interim belt is like a "2nd best" trophy in kids teeball. Everyone knows its not the real belt and its just a feel good bit of fluff.

My vote is strip the belt if the champ can't defend and keep it in play. I prefer twice a year over once.

I think most fighters would want option 2 since it keeps the PPV money in play.

You have to beat the champ to be the champ. Plain and simple.

That said, interim titles are also stupid. I say champ keeps title, and all other fights are regular fights. The interim title is pointless. It is basically a title stating a fighter is the number one contender. It's unnecessary.

I like the strip idea, but only when a champ is out for a prolonged period.

I don't think someone should sprain an ankle, have to pull from a fight, and then lose their belt.

If they're gone for 10 months, then sure. Strip them and let them get first crack when they get back.

However, that's gotta be across the board. You can't do an interim title for one guy and strip the other.
