Hi ASammy1,

How fun for you doing your first race!

I'm assuming this is the Shamrock 8k in Virginia Beach (looked at your location, and then did a Yahoo! search for +"8k" +"march 21" +"virginia"). Anyway, since the 1/2 marathon and marathon races aren't until the next day, I would guess you won't have too much trouble finding parking. But, I would still try to get to the race venue earlier rather than later. It is no fun starting a race all stressed out from trying to find parking and such. For an 8am race start, I'd try to get there no later than 7am. You can always stay in your warm car until closer to race start time and not have to worry about traffic and parking 'cause you're already there.

As far as water goes, it depends on how long you think you're going to be out there and how warm the weather is going to be. Personally, I wouldn't take water, but that's only because I don't drink anything for runs under 1 hour unless it is super-duper hot. The map looks like they are going to have two water stops along the course. If you don't want to mess with those, you might want to bring a 16 oz. disposable bottle of water with you -- fits easily in one hand and you can toss it in a bin once you're finished with it.

It looks like there will be a mix of walkers, joggers, and runners, so try not to stress out if you have to maneuver your way around. Try to be honest with yourself re where to position yourself at the start. If you are super-fast, get up front so you're not tripping over the walkers. If you are going to be walking, position yourself near the back so you don't get mowed over by the runners.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!!!

And, be sure to give us a race report when you're done.

Thanks Michele! And yes, you are right... I am doing the Shamrock 8k in VB. It's a popular race weekend and one of the largest on east coast.

The weather will be chilly probably around 40ish or so. The high for the day is only going to be 48

so the more I think about it, the more I am realizing I don't want to have to carry a bottle with me.

I will definitely be at the back of the pack as this will be more of a wog (walk/jog) for me. Definitely being honest here.

I'm excited, but nervous too. I'm just glad that this race is open to all levels so I wont feel like a complete idiot when I come in last in my age group!
