Too Much, Too Soon!

So, some of you know I ran a 1/2 marathon last November. I then took a break from running for about 5 months. Started back in early April and most recently have been doing about two 7 mile runs per week (very gentle rollers on a mix of paved paths and sidewalks). I estimate I've been doing about 10 minute miles or so -- so pretty much jogging and focusing on distance rather than speed.

Yesterday morning I realized I left a UPS package on my desk that need to go out on Friday!

There is a UPS Store very close to my office that does Saturday pick-ups. So, I got the brilliant idea to jog over there and back home. I had done my usual 7 miler the previous morning and didn't think anything of the fact that I haven't done two days in a row since last year (I've been cycling, doing the elliptical or stair climber, or yoga on my off days). Well, I got turned around a couple times on the paved trail that I THOUGHT went straight through to where I work (hah!), both going and coming back home and I had to walk to lug the 15 pound box to the UPS Store. Oh, and the

gentle rollers" of my normal route were not so gentle on this one -- there were some steep up and downs as the path went underneath roads and came back up on the other side. By the time I got about 2 miles from home I had to walk the rest of the way. All in all it took me about 3 hours from the time I left home to the time I got back (and I did dilly-dally at the office for a few to drink some water and pee). Oh, and I stopped at a coffee shop on the way out and the way back to use their facilities.

My legs were positively ACHING when I got back home and I told my husband I hadn't hurt like that since the 1/2 (I ran that 1/2 after only making it to an 8 mile long run previously and taking several weeks off leading up to the race due to a cycling injury). Today I continue to be quite sore. So, I decided to map my jog out and see how far I really went -- 12.76 miles! Ridiculous!

Lesson learned: DO NOT INCREASE MILEAGE DRASTICALLY!!! I just got two new Coach Troy virtual reality cycling dvd's (Tucson and Lake Placid) that I was really looking forward to trying out and now I'm too sore to enjoy them. Guess I'll be taking a few days off for some yoga . . . sigh . . .

Hope you're feeling better soon and back at it.

But... you DID 12.7 miles. You probably would have never thought you could!

Yoga till it feels better.... And hot tubs and massages. Good luck and hang in there. Hopefully it will only be short term troubles.

Yeah, with a 15 lb weight for half of it!
