the bj penn vs. Edgar decision...

I didn't post here while I was gone, and so I haven't posted in a while...which makes this somewhat old news, but I wanted to make a topic about it.

I'm a fan of both fighters, and I thought BJ would win convincingly. That said, Edgar won that fight.

I didn't see it live, and so when MMAlaskan told me that it was a robbery, I accepted it until I watched the fight on my DVR.

According to him, BJ convincingly won the first 3 rounds, and maybe the fourth...and that is bullshit.

BJ, in my eyes, won 2 rounds. Edgar was competitive for the two rounds bj won, which were the first two, and BJ was NOT competitive for the last two rounds, which were obviously Edgar's...and while I do think the third round was close, I think Edgar definitely got it.

I disagree with the idiotic judges that gave Edgar the first two rounds, but as dumb as they are, they made the correct call in saying edgar won.

That said, BJ was just not himself...it wasn't edgar stepping up as much as it was BJ blowing it. His movement was awful, he didn't even try for a takedown, and he seemed content just to throw the occasional jab rather than try for any combos or powershots.

But even with that, BJ lost. I've documented as being a huge bj fan, but he lost...period. The rematch should be good, and BJ will probably step up and look much better, but either way...the people saying bj was robbed need to be quiet. He did not deserve the decision.

Also, that said...you guys know how I have been saying how maynard is better than people were giving him credit for?

He beat the champ, who beat sherk and bj. Maynard is legit. I'd honestly rather see Maynard get the next title shot, and bj fighting griffin for the contender spot.

In my books, it should have been called a draw (the third round was too close to call, although that's when the tide was turning certainly in Edgar's favor).

What's interesting to me is that BJ pretty much mentally lost.

He could have come out round 5, taken Edgar down a couple times and sealed the round. I know he was gassed as fuck, but cmon, your belt is on the line.

I think a couple factors played into this.

1) the heat -- all the fighters said the heat really gassed them out

2) training -- I think something happened in Penn's training and he was injured, or not conditioned properly or something

3) the cut -- Edgar cut very little weight and BJ cut too much IMO (looked a little pudgier than when he fought Kenflo in my eyes)

4) BJ's will -- Edgar got under his skin, BJ began to lose confidence in himself. The last 3 fights he's had his way with people on the feet (Sherk, Diego, KenFlo)... here he found himself severely outpaced and couldn't land enough big shots

I think we will see a much more focused, slightly lighter (hopefully he's smart enough to realize this) and better prepared Penn in the rematch. If he comes truly ready to go, I still think no-one at LW on this planet can match him.

I agree that Maynard deserves a title shot soon, but I think an immediate rematch is fair given how close the fight was and the dominant nature of BJ's championship reign.

If it were up to me, I'd have Gray fight first just to legitimize Edgar as a champion (I think he's evolved enough now to win that rematch, especially over 5 rounds). But BJ/Edgar 2 will be good also.

And yes, I think his less than stellar performance against Nate has clouded people's minds to the fact that Gray Maynard is a beast who can virtually out-wrestle anyone in the division and just avenged his only defeat. His stand up could use some polishing, but I just think he had an off night against Nate (trying to be too exciting), and possibly did the same thing in the Huerta fight. I hate lay n' pray, but I respect it's effectiveness, and Gray does it very well.

Cool that you often disagree with your brother, and that you both articulate your points well. Makes for interesting discussion

asugar just wants any excuse to try to pretend Gray is a top-tier lightweight.

I agree with you and I've been saying for awhile now that Maynard is legit. I also think something was wrong with Penn.

Yep, Frankie won 3 rounds and I said it that night, but BJ looked clearly fucked up somehow.

Can't make excuses when you enter the cage though, Frankie earned the belt

I've watched the fight a several times now. The one indisputable conclusion I reached was that I was glad I wasn't one of the judges.
