Couture vs Toney In Boston

While the bout isn't official yet, mmajunkie says that James Toney is likely to make his MMA debut against UFC Hall-of-Famer, Randy Couture on UFC 118 in Boston:

In a match likely to re-ignite the "boxing vs. MMA" debate, a bout between 10-time UFC champion Randy Couture (18-10 MMA, 15-7 UFC) and former boxing champion James Toney (0-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is targeted for the UFC's first trip to Boston.

Fighters Only was the first to report the possibility of the pairing, and MMAjunkie.com ( www.mmajunkie.com: www.mmajunkie.com ) today confirmed that while the matchup is far from official, it's in the works for a headlining spot at the event.

The weight where the bout is going to be contested at hasn't been announced yet. Couture has been fighting at 205 for his last few bouts, and even though Toney and his traininer, Juanito Ibarra has said in the past that they want his first bout to be at heavyweight, the boxer weighed in at 217 on his last match, so a drop to 205 seems feasible.

UFC 118 will be headlined by a lightweight championship rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, and according to the report, Toney's debut will likely be the co-headliner.

My first thought was red hot rage at that bullshit being on a great card, then I calmed down and thought it will be kinda cool to see the style clash between two middle age athletes, then the rage-fog clouded in when I realized that Couture is wasting one of the last fights he will have in his career on a guy that is completely irrelevant to both mma and boxing.

Goddamn this fight.

my predictions for this event:

Edgar will beat BJ by flying armbar.

Florian will outwrestle Maynard en route to a gnp victory.

and James toney will latch onto a gogoplata on Couture.

Ridicolous.

If Couture loses this one I can't tell you how choked and pissed I'd be.

I think stylewise Couture can't lose this one but age wise and the amount of people that will tune in to see it, it makes sense. But Toney can't win this, he just can't.

I don't think anything could rival how upset I was when Jones got KO'd by johnson, but Randy losing would come as close as possible.

Couture's just got to work on his doubles, never his style of wrestling but I'm sure he could do it. Then he has the fight won in 2 minutes.

If he stands with Toney he gives him a tiny chance. If he clinches with him, he gives him an even tinier chance, but it's still a chance. If he takes him down and GNPs him RIGHT AWAY, he will win EASILY.

Couture is smart enough to know how to win this fight, and won't let the MMA community down.

Personally I'd rather see Toney in a fight where he had a chance, like against James Irvin or something.

And I also agree with MMAlaskan, this is a 'waste' of one of Randy's last fights. Whatever. It'll be satisfying if he makes Toney tap out to strikes.
