Alan Belcher vs. Demian Maia targeted for UFC Fight Night 22 main event

by Staff on May 28, 2010 at 10:45 am ET

Alan Belcher apparently will get his wish.

Earlier this week the fast-rising UFC middleweight contender Alan Belcher (16-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) told Radio ( ) he wants a step up in competition and a fight with former title challenger Demian Maia (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC).

Now, the duo is expected to headline UFC Fight Night 22 in September.

The bout, first reported by, has been agreed upon by at least one competitor, has confirmed with a source close to the negotiations.

As reported earlier this week, UFC Fight Night 22 takes place Sept. 15 and serves as a lead-in for the debut episode of "The Ultimate Fighter 12" on Spike TV. UFC officials have not announced the event or its location and venue, but as we previously reported, an East Coast market could play host.

"Right now we're pushing for Demian Maia because I think [the UFC] has plans for everyone else," Belcher said Wednesday. "I think that's an interesting fight. That will help me solidify the No. 1 contender spot.

"I think the timing would be right for me to fight (Vitor) Belfort after that."

Belcher took his latest step toward title contention with a second-round submission victory over grappling ace Patrick Cote at UFC 113 earlier this month. The Muay Thai fighter and Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt is now 4-1 over his past five fights, and the lone loss came via close split-decision to Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Additionally, as a testament to his exciting fighting style, Belcher has won four consecutive fight-night bonuses (two for "Fight of the Night" and two for "Submission of the Night").

Maia, meanwhile, fights for the first time since a failed title bid against champion Anderson Silva. Maia suffered a decision loss in the headliner of April's UFC 112 event and has now lost two of his past three fights, which included a quick first-round knockout to Nate Marquardt this past August.

Despite the recent setbacks, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has racked up victories over notables such as Dan Miller, Chael Sonnen and Nate Quarry in the past couple years.
