What makes an exciting fighter?

What makes a fighter exciting? After comparing Fitch, GSP, and Shields, I was confused how people see them as the same. They are ground fighters, but so very different. But all have been called boring.

So, I will stick with the Welterweight division (some dudes bounced around) and go through some fighters WINS. Im not counting their losses as making them boring cause a boring fighter can lay on them or stall, etc., neglecting their excitement

Also, I will go with their last 10 wins or when they entered UFC or some other major promotion where masses could watch them (WEC, Strikeforce, DREAM, etc.)

Put these fighters in order for YOU from most exciting to boring before reading the list below, and post it This IS NOT a who is your favorite list. Put these in order of, if you see there name on the main card, who gets you wet with anticipation.

Jon Fitch

George St. Pierre

Josh Koscheck

Thiago Alves

Diego Sanchez

Nate Diaz

Carlos Condit

Jake Shields

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson

FITCH - Pull out the kindle and get your snuggie on. People say Fitch is boring for staying in guard and beating dudes up. Opponents are never in danger of being finished, but its not fun for them to be beat on for 15 minutes. His last finish was June of 2007. But in his last 10 wins he has 8 decisions and 2 subs. 6 decisions in a row

SHIELDS - Shields is boring is what I hear. Count sheep or watch him fight? He gets takedowns, dominant positions, and finishes his opponents. In his last 10 wins, 7 have been finishes (6 subs, 1 TKO), and 6 of those finishes were all in the first round.

GSP is boring. Hear it all the time. Haters right? Anyways, in his last 10 wins, he has 4 finishes (3 TKO and 1 Sub) and 6 decisions (4 decisions being champ). He has had an all ground battle versus Fitch, and standup match versus Koscheck. He has KO'd people with a head kick, beat on so bad the corner has thrown in the towel.

Thiago Alves - Men cream in their pants when they hear he is gonna be on a card. In his last 10 wins the dude has 3 decisions 7 finishes (all 7 by way of TKO/KO, only 2 were finished inside round 1)

Diego Sanchez - Even I get a little wet when he fights. In his last 10 wins he has 6 decisions and 4 finishes (2 subs and 2 TKO/KO).

Rumble Johnson - electricity shoots off this dudes chest and lights up the stadium. Since coming into the UFC he has 5 wins, all by TKO/KO and 4 of those were in the first round.

Josh Koscheck - Douchebag or not, you want to watch him fight. In his last 10 wins he has 5 decisions and 5 finishes (3 TKO/KO and 2 Subs. 3 finishes were inside round 1.)

Nate Diaz - Love him or hate him, you love to watch him. Since coming to he UFC he has 8 wins with only 1 by decision. Of his 7 finishes he has 6 subs and 1 TKO, with 3 being inside the first round.

Carlos Condit - Amazing in WEC, and since coming to the UFC he is pulling off wins as well. Since his WEC debut he has 8 wins only 1 went to decision (split) and he has 7 finishes (4 subs and 3 TKO/KO. 4 were inside round 1).

Keynotes:

Thiago Alves, Carlos Condit, Nate Diaz, and Jake Shields have 7 finishes a piece.

Jake Shields has finished the most people inside round 1.

Both Nate Diaz and Jake Shields each have 6 subs and 1 TKO

Thiago Alves has the most wins by way of TKO/KO, but Rumble has KO'd the most in the first round.

Both GSP and Sanchez have 6 decision and 4 finishes in their last 10 wins.

Fitch, GSP, Shields, and Sanchez have all had their last 3 wins by way of decision.

Jake Shields is the only fighter to win his last 10 in a row (currently 15 fight win streak)

Carlos Condit

George St. Pierre

Jake Shields

Diego Sanchez

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson

Nate Diaz

Josh Koscheck

Thiago Alves

Jon Fitch

To me, it looks like people judge fighters by there last few fights. Fitch, GSP, Shields, and Sanchez have gone to decision victorys at least 3 times in a row and most or all have recently been labeled boring

Thiago Alves has had 2 decisions in a row. Will be interesting if the masses start calling him boring if he gets another decision. Also, if Fitch finishes two people in a row, I can already imagine all the people hanging on his balls.

Carlos Condit is the most exciting figher in the UFC right now to me. Dude puts on amazing fights everytime. Even his decision with Elenberger was badass. He has the all-round game where he can finish dudes anywhere. I would like to see him take on Koscheck.

Its just crazy how people call Shields boring to me. He has finished 6 of his last 10 opponents in the first round!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh wait, I forgot, he has had 3 decisions in a row If Shields was KOing dudes in the 1st round ala Rumble Johnson instead of making them tap and on a 15 fight win streak, he would be the most popular fighter on the planet right now.

Conclusion:

KO = exciting

Everything else is boring

I think that is how this goes

I think people just need to go watch boxing or something.

Boring is jabbing a one eyed man for 5 rounds and not trying to finish at all when he could have finished him at anytime he wanted to.... Or taking a guy down going for one submission and losing position and not trying to do anything there after.

Fighting like you dont want to lose is boring.

Guys like Mark Munoz, Chris Lytle, the Diaz Bros, Carlos Condit, Cain Velásquez, Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin ect ect ect are guys you want to see fight. They fight to win and win as impressively and quickly as possible.

GSP is going through what Tim Sylvia was when he was champ, complete fear of losing that strap.

Contrary to popular belief Timmeh actually used to be pretty good and Hella exciting, he lost the belt and went on a decision rampage once he got it back.

GSP is so fucking good he could finish anyone at WW with relative ease IMO.... But he is so afraid of making a mistake and losing the belt he wont take any risks.... Hence letting go of submissions.

Also I dont know many people that have said Shields is boring, really. Just questioned his competition.

Up until Hendo who did he beat recently that was impressive?

Hes put together a list of good wins, but nobody (up until Hendo) that made you go, damn... He could beat some of the best in the world.

Beat Mayhem.... But if the 3rd round was 5 seconds longer he would have gone to sleep. Subbed Lawler, again, good win, but nothing to make you go wow. And Paul Daley, as much as I love watching Paul fight he cant wrestle.

Great post. And I totally agree about boxing/K-1 being better if all someone wants is to see is ppl getting KTFO. There is a bunch of dumb fans in smaller UK shows that still boo the ground game and really just wanna watch a swinging contest between two out of shape nightclub doormen.

For me I guess exciting = takes risks to finish the fight /or mixes it up. Boring for me is a guy that wins my neutralising his opponents offence rather than finding ways to mount his own.

I don't think GSP is boring. Each time out he tries different things, he beats people at their own game, he's ever evolving, he's a credit to the sport. He's just run out of viable challengers at this point (accept I think Shields is a waay bigger threat than people seem to think- but we'll see).

For me I'd go with in order:

Exciting:

-GSP (Because he's champ, because I like to see him perform and evolve)

-Alves (he brings it in the old Chute Boxe sense and goes for the kill everytime- just needs to start making weight saftely or move up)

-Sanchez (he has had some decisions of late sure, but they tend to be the best fights on the card too. It's about mixing it up and he always does so).

-Sheilds (isn't nearly as boring as his rep suggests, I think History said something about the combination of offensive BJJ and suspect Cardio being a plus for him in this regard - and I agree).

-Condit (is a real risking star and it's a great time to follow his career right now imo.)

Meh...

-Nate & Rumble -( Not seen enough from either guy to say that I get especially excited when i see their name on a fight card. I think Johnson needs really to move the hell up and then we can see what he's really made of at Mw. Beating down and scoring KO's on much smaller dudes doesn't impress/excite me all that much.)

Boring/annoying:

-Koscheck & Fitch - (Can't stand either of em. They basically suffocate the hell out of the chasing pack at WW, still refuse to fight each other and niether of them has anything for GSP. Not a good combination.)

I agree with a lot of your points. I think Condit is an absolutely amazing fighter and I would like to see him get the title shot after Shields loses. I like every fighter on your list except for Kos and Fitch. I can't stand Fitch. I'm not going to try to rank the fighters but GSP, Condit and Alvez are my top three.
