Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo on tap for UFC on Versus 4 in June

by Staff on Mar 14, 2011 at 1:00 pm ET

Pat Barry (6-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Cheick Kongo (15-6-2 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) are the first fighters earmarked for UFC on Versus 4.

Sources close to the event today told ( ) that the heavyweights have verbally agreed to meet, and contracts are expected to be signed shortly. first reported the matchup.

UFC on Versus 4 takes place June 26, and the night's main card airs live on Versus.

The promotion hasn't locked down a city and venue to host the event.

Barry hopes to build on his most recent decision victory over Joey Beltran at "UFC Fight Night 23: UFC Fights for the Troops 2." And he's probably happy just to have emerged healthy from the three-round slugfest after breaking his hand and foot in a submission loss to his idol, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, at UFC 115.

Kongo most recently appeared this past October at UFC 120 and met disappointment when he went to a draw with Travis Browne. Although he surged ahead on scorecards later in the three-round fight, the French striker was deducted a point for repeatedly grabbing Browne's shorts. The draw muted a win over Paul Buentello at UFC on Versus 2, which helped him build momentum after back-to-back losses to Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez.

It's unknown at this time if Barry vs. Kongo will take place on the televised main card of UFC on Versus 4.

It's looking like a loser leaves town scenario in this one.

Barry should win this one, and he needs to do it convincingly since his last fight wasn't all that impressive.
