Drumming For Yoga - How to?

mibson2010-07-04 21:03:02 +0000 #1
I have been offered a job drumming for "Ujjayi" yoga classes. I have experience with drumming and percussion but not much experience with yoga.

Where can I learn about drumming for yoga?

How do you drum for yoga? My friend who is a yoga instructor said it is slow and simple drumming, but I need more information.

I dont have the opportunity to attend a Ujjayi class before the first class I am going to drum to..

Thanks for any help, links, and suggestions.

Dear Mibson

This should be interesting, perhaps just go and do a class and come and share this with us. There is a drumming circle in my neighbourhood as well and I have attend a few sessions, but it is always very dynamic and vigorous and extremely energizing.

As a yoga teacher myself and if I would do something like that I will give you the following information which might help you to understand what is expected you and your drum: Ujjayi is a pranayama exercise (breathing technique), the purpose is to bring greater tranquility into the body, it is used to soothe the nervous system in yoga and to calm the mind. The basic form of this pranayama slows down the heart rate as well and as such is good for people with high blood pressure. So I would imagine that your rythm should be slow and soothing if that is possible. Perhaps use a lower sounding drum etc. I think this is something you have to do and allow the people to share their expereinces afterwards with you, in this way you will be able to fine tune what you can offer them.

Would love to hear what was the outcome.
