It is possible to learn to swim without a teacher. But it is harder, and your tehnique might end being less than perfect. Not to mention the danger of drowning.

Go and find a studio, or class. It doesn't matter if they seem not that fancy. For a beginner, anything is better than doing it alone. Because personal feedback is irreplaceable.

If you really need to do it alone, seek advise online.

Perhaps, you might want to reflect on the question while staying in the Gurpranam Pose for an extended period of time and see what happens...

You can "start" yoga by yourself. There is however a question as to whether you could learn yoga by yourself. It could be done but I think it is less likely.

In looking back on my beginning and my development it was important to have some live interaction with someone more knowledgable than I. I had almost no home practice preferring to go to classes five times per week.

At home I had a video and just never really found that to be much help other than memorizing whaat pose came after what pose and then all that got tossed out later on

Perfect movement is not relevant. Safe movement is. Feeling the movment(s) and heightening one's awareness of their own body is.

There is also the question of what kind of yoga are you referring to and what do you use it for.

Yoga from the Sanskrit root word "yuj", meaning to "control", "yoke", "unite" is a general term in Hinduism and has a wide range of meanings.

I'd like to take Kaos' comments one step further for she/he is exactly right about meanings being wide ranging.

I am not aware of any definition of "yoga" that could be learned completely at home. Though it may be posssible with a book to learn YogaFit at home since one can teach it to others after 18 hours of training. Surely one could learn it at home in a similar amount of time.

Otherwise I'm baffled.
